burn, baby, burn....

Earlier today from CNN, before news of death:
The Rev. Jerry Falwell was found unconscious in his office today and taken to a hospital, a Liberty University executive told a newspaper. Ron Godwin, the executive vice president of Falwell's Liberty University, said Falwell was found unresponsive around 10:45 a.m. and taken to Lynchburg General Hospital. Godwin said he was not sure what caused the collapse, but said Falwell "has a history of heart challenges." [a truer line never spoke...]

Reminds me of Jay Leno's line about Jesse Helms when he had heart surgery - "that's truly exploratory surgery".

You'll find Deadheads all across the spectrum of society, right? Well, here's my 2 cents: Falwell had a rock-solid core of sincere, deeply-held convictions, and he had the guts to make those convictions known. Agree or disagree with the man, he helped more people (including desperate, expectant moms, the unborn, those in the grip of chemical addictions, etc.) than most of us could even if we had a dozen lifetimes to live. I know this will be a minority position on this thread, and I'm perfectly OK with that.
Blessings to you all.

the minority just grew by one....

Jerry Falwell made a lot of stupid and hurtful statements in his time. He apologized for most. None of us are perfect.
I grew up in VA, and know quite a bit about the Thomas Roads ministry. I did not agree with a lot Mr. Falwell(yes, that's right...it is called R-E-S-P-E-C-T for the dead)said and did. He did, however make a real and positive difference in the lives of many. Does the negative outweigh the positive. I will freely admit that I am not qualified to make that judgement. I believe judgement will be made, but none of "us" will be the judge.

It is my fervent hope that at "your(any of my brothers and sisters) passing" no one spews the vitriole that has been expressed here.

I'm well aware of how many things he said to issue a condemnation of, as I said, anyone whose lifestyle or philosophy did not agree with his, but I would hope, too, for all of us that upon each of our passings "no one spews the vitriole that has been expressed here."

And a hallelujah to that.

I have to say, I was never a fan of the guy or people like him, but a death is a death. I look at it more in a "Grand Scheme" or balance sheet kind of way. To put it in very simplistic terms, I would deem Falwell a "bad guy", and they never seem to die. I have grown weary of opening a paper and seeing the death announcements for the likes of a Cousteau, Henson, Garcia, and countless, countless others. These I would call the "good guys". The bad guys seem to be damn near immortal, just look at the hierarchy of the right wing in this country. If there is now one less, hey I'm good with that. And, if this guy had a grain of truth to anything he did and said, he's in a better place now and he or his supporters shouldn't be sad about a thing. He got the promotion he's worked for his whole life, right? In short, one less bad guy in my book.

I guess it's a human tendency to see those whose ideas are very different from ours as "bad guys." I suppose Falwell did the same. I think it is a healthy thing - as several have already expressed - to leave final judgment to God (or replace "God" with whatever you choose.)
Oddly enough, many of the same folks who celebrate the death of Falwell were the same ones having a big cryfest when Saddam was executed. I guess they think rape rooms are better for humankind than homes for recovering alcoholics. Go figure.
I wish you all a happy and peaceful day. : )

Good post. Anybody can be compassionate when someone they like passes from the scene. It's when someone less likable dies that we're challenged- that's when the masks come off and everyone has to lay their cards on the table.

I think he was a fucking hypocrite who was no more a man of christ than the toilet paper I use to wipe my ass...

Then again, I don't have his advanced theological understanding to see how the message of christ is supposed to be anti-labor, anti-gay, anti-feminism, anti-semitic (I mean, who knew the last supper was a seder?), etc...

Then again, I think Mother Teresa was a fraud....

A national figure dies, granted, a controversial one at that, who achieved notoriety for using the pulpit to pass judgment on those whose philosophies and lifestyles did not agree with his, but come on, bluedevil! What possible good do you hope to accomplish by saying such things?

"I think he was a fucking hypocrite who was no more a man of christ than the toilet paper I use to wipe my ass..."

In all his life, Falwell never said anything more offensive. Did he ever take food from your plate or do anything that hurt you or the people in your life? If not, then just let it go. He's dead. Rest in peace.

And what's this about Mother Teresa? Were you abused in parochial school, or what?

No, no parochial school, but as a fervent anti-papist (oh, thinks for letting babies out of limbo last week), the catholic church is another institution that I don't have much use for. Of course, implementing the social gospel in latin america is a no go....

No, Falwell didn't take food off my plate, but if you don't think rhetoric from the pulpit doesn't have an effect, then I suggest you don't speak to any of my gay friends. Then again, we can probably get them to pray themselves straight. Having grown up in Va., NC, and Georgia, I have nothing but utter FUCKING CONTEMPT for Falwell, Robertson, and other televangelists of their ilk who separate the old, lonely, timid and scared from their money for highly dubious "good works". Again, it's the rampany hypocrisy of folks like that. BTW, I was born next door to Billy Graham's father in Charlotte, NC, so I know a thing or two about the bible belt and the shit that spews from the pulpit.

"Then again, we can probably get them to pray themselves straight".
All I can say to that is SOME people have sexual tastes as a result of sexual abuse by a FUCKED UP peer at a young age. Some are born that way. Most men are born straight, with no desire for sucking someone off and sodomy.

Anyway, most people I know define themselves by who they are and not what they do with their wang. Some abused people respond to faith & prayer and do return to their straight lifestyle and desire for women. No big deal!
If you don't believe in prayer/God, well respect those who do. Lots of "gays" are F'n hypocrites and haters also. Like anyone else can be.

I think it's ignorant & stupid for people to make a deal out of their wangdangdoodle. Trite.

"I have nothing but utter FUCKING CONTEMPT for Falwell, Robertson, and other televangelists of their ilk who separate the old, lonely, timid and scared from their money for highly dubious "good works".

I BELIEVE YOU! "FUCKING CONTEMPT! OLD, LONELY, TIMID and SCARED". Hey and you know, then they have to eat dog food-lol.
I've given to Ministries and it was MY MONEY to give, but then money is not my petty god.Period.

If you ever give, give joyfully with no strings attached, to where you are spiritually feed. Otherwise, don't waste your precious $$. do your thang and let it all hang out-hahaha! Eat, drink and be happy, for tomorrow you may die. OR
I perfer to live life like there is no "death" but a new birth from this mortal coil. See you on sunday :)

While I am far from a fan, I will definitely concede that through his university and the various charity works associated with his church, Falwell did a hell of a lot more good than he did harm with his often bigoted statements. What will be interesting to watch (and easy to predict) is the venom that will be sprayed at his obit by his supposedly more "compassionate" critics. Hilarious.

I got zero compassion for the man. Perhaps had he shown more true compassion, and less time passing the collection plate and solidfying political power, I might find some in me. But then again, I'll surely burn in the fire down below with the man with the horns and pointy little stick...

Of course, I'm also the type of moron that worries about why Regent University has more graduates, by a count of almost fourfold, working for the Bush administration than any other university.

You don't attack people and their belief system.
You don't put people down because their opinions differ from yours. Your posts don't say, "hey listen to me tell you how I'm right and you're wrong because I'm so psuedo-intellectual."

I have seen plenty of posters type rants and say way worse shit than I have. Just because I'm turning it back onto the people who usually do the attacking, fuckin cowards who try to push people around. Someone gives them back what they are usually dishing out and they hide their heads in the sand like the bitches they are.

Like I said, I don't have a problem with you. Most of the posters here are really cool. Just like everything else there are a few bad apples. Look at Bluddevil's post about Falwell, he was somebody's father, he was someone's friend and that is the kind of garbage he writes. I've watched people post things religious and see JOTS attack them, I've seen them apologize and he still doesn't back off. Do you remember Dire's posts a few months back? "Who the fuck is Cliff Hucker?" Don't act like that wasn't out of line. Cliff was attacked for posting in the third person. Go back read the names and personal things that were said.
I'm just giving the few a taste of their own medicine and they don't seem to like it.
I'm not pretending to justify what I'm doing, but no one here is innocent.

If you believe in religion, then you probably believe they(those who have offended you and others w/ personal attacks)will be judged by a higher power after this life....so why bother. It's not your assignment in life to mete out justice. Is it?

If you do this because you care about these people and wish to help them improve the quality of their journey, then why make it a pissing contest?

Giving somebody a taste of their own medicine is just an excuse the sink to that level. So, to do that(make personal attacks) in the name of justice for Cliff Hucker is somewhat hypocritical.

Look, I 'm not gonna change you, just like you are not gonna change them or me. But isn't it nice that we can chat without stooping to 4th grade name-calling.

In conclusion, if you want to be the Robin Hood of LMA, go ahead. But, your ability to make waves has weakened and your splashes are few and far between these days....why not hang up your bow and arrow and gather around the fire with the tribe...what do you say?

Exactly my point. Most people who vocally implore others to show more compassion usually reserve their own compassion strictly for those who think just like them.

Not all, but most. At least that's been my experience. And I'm not necessarily exempting myself from this group.

Rasta, what is up with the new kids? They must ride the short bus. If I was "2" anything I would have said something like:

"Jerry in 77 with eyes wide open, that chevy was draining the life from my oscar"

or...

"How about 5-17-78 in Alberquerque, we were just wee lads with fishing poles and Cliff was absent"

or...

"The quick grey fox jumped over the lazy eye of that dancing bunny goddess, we all waited for dazzling sunshine that night"

or...

well, you get the picture.
